Date: February 16, 2013

Directions: TBA

Cost: $20: includes race entry, snacks, parking, games, HST and 2013 Dontgetlost Club Membership (required for insurance)

Details:
Kicking off with a fun nav based race. Kids have two choices:
  1. There will be a fun mass start 2.5K race with some nav and some marked routes - no off-trail navigation is required for this race; or
  2. Those confident with off-trail navigation (ie ARK Attack and ARX) can officially take part in the O-Cup race that is starting at the same time. This race traverses some rough terrain and includes some difficult navigation, so we recommend only those who have previous experience in this type of race take part.
You can make your selection when registering. It is suggested that kids in the main ARK program take part in the Kids Icebreaker race, those in ARK Attack or ARX and confident with off-trail navigation compete in the O-Cup race. It is also suggested that kids under 8 be accompanied by a parent.  If you are still unsure which race your kids should take part in, please  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. After that we will have a short break, refuel with some snacks provided and then we finish off with a combination of man-tracker and capture the flag. Hide treasure whilst searching for other teams hidden bounty. Some kids will be bounty hunters - stealing treasure from all teams for themselves.

The organised event will conclude around 1pm, but feel free to spend the rest of the day exploring the Conservation Area.

Gear for Snow Day! More specific gear becomes a necessity - a dry, warm kids is a happy kid!

Socks: Wool or even better, Smart Wool. Keeps feet warm and wicks away moisture. While you're at it, pick up some small, waterproof ankle gaiters - it keeps the snow from getting into shoes.
Shoes: What we suggest for Spring and Fall works just as well for winter. You can get shoes that incorporate Gore-Tex to keep all the snow out, but they can be pricey.
Layers: A good base layer (top and bottom) and a synthetic, moisture resistant outer shell.

It goes without saying, but also remember gloves and toque.

The three main no nos of winter running are:

  1. No cotton. Cotton holds any moisture, which chills and brings down core temperature faster than you would believe.
  2. No boots. It's hard enough to run in the snow as it is, heavy boots just make a hard job even harder.
  3. No snow pants. Same reason, heavy and restrictive is not fun.
