GHO MAPS

This web page provides information (scale, contour interval, terrain type, year of production, and directions) for all of Golden Horseshoe Orienteering's  maps. Our first map (King's Forest) in Hamilton was created in 1969. Today we have over 60 orienteering and adventure running maps throughout the Golden Horseshoe. Our maps are digitized using OCAD software. If you would like to learn to make an orienteering map then sign up for a clinic today. A list of our maps is here.

MAP SALES
The Golden Horseshoe Orienteering Club produces high quality, detailed maps specifically for use in adventure running and orienteering. The club retains copyright privileges on all the maps it produces. We generally do not sell copies directly to the public but we will sell copies to other sports or recreational organizations if they are to be used to stage orienteering events and are organized by a level 1 (or higher) official of the Canadian Orienteering Federation.

TYPES OF MAPS
We produce four types of maps (classic orienteering maps, sprint orienteering maps, adventure running maps, and school maps). Classic orienteering maps are generally 1:10,000 and used for middle distance and long distance orienteering events. Sprint orienteering maps are 1:5,000 and used for sprint races.  Adventure running maps are not as detailed as classic orienteering maps and are printed at a scale of 1:20,000. School maps are generally printed at a scale of 1:1,000 and cover the school yard of a school and possibly and adjacent park. Golden Horseshoe Orienteering  can be contracted to create an orienteering map of your school, neighbourhood or local park.

GHO TERRAIN
Southern Ontario has a variety of orienteering terrain and this is reflected in GHO's orienteering maps. Our maps can be divided into five main terrain types: ridge & valley, moraine, escarpment, limestone and park. Here are a couple of map samples from these different terrain types.

GHO wishes to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their financial support in developing new adventure running maps for the community, school events, provincial races and the 2006 North American Orienteering Championships in Halton Region, Peel Region and Simcoe County. The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Minstry of Culture, receives annually $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario's charity casino initiative.
