ARK ATTACK
OVERVIEW
ARK ATTACK is an ARK group for boys and girls aged 10 to 16 who want to build on their previous Adventure Running Kids® experience.
Top adventure runners and coaches will motivate and challenge kids to run faster, run further, run smarter, run stronger, and get muddier!
ARK Attack begins to incorporate formalized training methods and race tactics while continuing the fun and muddy adventure from Adventure Running Kids! ARK Attack emphasizes group activities, team building and social activities to create a strong team to help kids improve their trail running, cross country, hill climbing, problem solving and navigation skills. A typical ARK Attack hour will include a warm up followed by a single exercise about 30-40 minutes in length, which will alternate between navigation or physical based session from week to week, sometimes followed by a short core and agility work out.
TRAINING NIGHTS
ARK ATTACK is available in Hamilton on Wednesday and runs from early September to early June (with some breaks for school holidays in the winter). New for Spring 2013, we are also starting the program in K-W on Tuesday nights.
ARK ATTACK takes place same time and location as the ARK program during the autumn and spring ARK seasons. Winter locations in ARK ATTACK will change a little more. Further details of winter training nights locations coming soon.
ELIGIBILITY
So who can take part in ARK Attack? Here are some rough criteria we expect the kids in ARK Attack to be able to handle:
• Able to run at an easy, but constant and steady pace for at least 30 minutes.
• Completes the ‘Endurance’ and Speed and Power’ ARK stations for the full time 15-20 minutes without having to slow to a walk.
• Has no difficulty with the map reading aspects of the ARK 'Nav' Station.
• Finishes a regular hour of ARK and is still ‘eager’ for more running.
ARK Attack isn’t simply a group for the older kids nor for just the fastest kids. The most important attributes for taking part in ARK Attack is the desire to improve, to push themselves and having an open minded and positive attitude towards Adventure Running. |

AdventureScience.ca founder and McMaster Earth Science PhD graduate, Simon Donato
TO BOLDLY GO!
AdventureScience.ca - Where Adventure Running meets Scientific Exploration
The final night (ARK FEST!) of our spring 2011 session will take place at Canterbury Hills and this year ARK athletes will listen to a short presentation by ARK Coach, Paul Trebilcock with presentation material prepared by Dr. Simon Donato. Simon, a graduate of the PhD program in the McMaster University School of Geography and Earth Sciences and now working in Calgary, is the founder of AdventureScience.ca. Adventure science is about getting outside, exploring the world, and understanding nature in a scientific way. Dr. Donato brings together many adventure runners to explore nature's mysteries.
Several former and current Adventure Running Kids coaches (incl. Paul Trebilcock, Hans Fransson, Joany Vershuuren, Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky, Mike Waddington and Kate MacNamara) have taken part in one or more of the Adventure Science projects.
Paul Trebilcock will provide a brief overview of two Adventure Science projects that he was part of including the search of Steve Fosset and the Blaze Niagara Escarpment race.
Steve Fosset search: Check out an interview here with Dr. Simon Donato.
Blaze Niagara Escarpment race: Check out this Daily Planet link to the AdventureScience.ca study on running the entire 900km Bruce Trail led by Dr. Tarnopolsky (our ARK hills and interval coach).
** This link on Daily Planet starts at the 5:50 mark.
AdventureScience.ca....sorta like where science class meets ARK!
Yeah, way cool eh.

We hope all the kids had a great time out there. We were doubly blessed with the weather, with the mega-thunderstorm on Saturday muddying the valley up nicely and then getting acres of sunshine on race day.
